What are Hair Extensions, You Ask?

These are an amazing hair enhancement that gives you longer, fuller hair instantly! Or in a couple hours anyway😜

You can have several different methods and combinations of them as well. The most common methods are:

  • Tape-ins
  • Sew in – Beaded weave or hand-tied
  • Micro-links
  • Fusion or K-tips

All of these are considered “permanent” meaning you wear them continuously with out removal like clip-ins.

How to Wash Hair Extensions: The Basics

First things first, let’s talk about how to wash hair extensions. It’s not rocket science, but a little extra TLC can go a long way. You’ll want to start by brushing your extensions before washing them. This helps to remove any tangles and makes the washing process much easier.

When washing, use lukewarm water and a sulfate-free shampoo – we recommend Davines OI line or Davines Heart of Glass! Gently massage the shampoo into your scalp (if your extensions are sewn in or taped) or onto the extensions themselves if they’re clip-ins. Be sure to avoid rubbing or twisting the hair—treat it like a delicate silk scarf!

Rinse thoroughly and follow up with a hydrating conditioner. Apply the conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends, avoiding the roots to prevent any build-up. Leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse with cool water to seal the cuticles and add some shine. Voila! You’ve just nailed how to wash hair extensions like a pro.

Drying Your Extensions: Air or Heat?

Now that your extensions are squeaky clean, it’s time to dry them. If you can, air-drying is the best option as it’s the gentlest on the hair. For clip-ins: Simply lay your extensions flat on a towel and let them dry naturally.

For sewn in or single strand methods: Let’s be real—sometimes, a girl’s gotta blow-dry. If you’re in a hurry, use a heat protectant spray and set your dryer to the lowest heat setting. Keep the dryer at least six inches away from your hair to prevent any heat damage. Remember, treating your extensions with care will keep them looking fresh and fabulous.

DON’T ever go to bed with wet extensions, this can create matting. If you are a night time shower human be sure to follow the blow dry instructions.

Brushing & Styling: 5 tips on caring for your extensions when styling

Learning how to care for hair extensions isn’t just about washing and drying; it’s also about maintaining them daily. Invest in a good-quality brush designed for extensions, like a loop brush or a wide-tooth comb. Start brushing from the ends and work your way up to avoid unnecessary pulling.

When styling, go easy on the heat. Just like your natural hair, extensions can get damaged by excessive heat. If you’re using a curling iron or straightener, always use a heat protectant and avoid going over the same section multiple times. Also, consider heatless styles like braids or buns for those days when you want to give your extensions a break. Finally always finish with a nourishing hair oil: our fav – Davines OI oil.

  1. Use heat protectant: Heart of Glass Sheer Glaze.
  2. Use low heat, and a really good blow dryer.
  3. Use a wide tooth comb or wet brush.
  4. Heatless styles are best if you can, such as braids or heatless curlers.
  5. Use nourishing oil for a finish everyday, such as Davines OI oil.

Sleeping & Swimming: Yes, There’s a Right Way!

So, you’ve mastered how to wash hair extensions and keep them looking fab during the day, but what about when you hit the hay or take a dip in the pool? No worries, I’ve got some tips!

Before bed, braid your hair or tie it in a loose ponytail to prevent tangling. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase can also do wonders for keeping your extensions smooth and tangle-free.

As for swimming, it’s best to avoid chlorinated pools or salty ocean water, as these can be drying. But if you can’t resist a swim, be sure to rinse your hair with clean water afterward and apply a leave-in conditioner to keep those strands hydrated.
